Dear Jacob,

twiprov:

I know I’m hurting Edward by writing to you, but I miss you terribly…
I wish you would forgive me and come to my show..
I knitted you a sweater, I hope it will fit your huge biceps…
Did I remember to turn off the oven?

Hey Jake. So, I’m having this show on Saturday, November 13th, at The PIT. No big deal, but it would mean a lot if you could make it.

Ardently and forever yours (just as friends),

Bella.

PS. If you do come, please wear a shirt.

PPS - Jacob, wear whatever you want.

You know you want it.

Hey MoFos!

Today I leave at 2pm on a van with 5 other improvisers to perform with Baby Wants Candy at:

Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA

and

Millersville University in Lancaster, PA

So far I figure with all the money I have spent on improv classes over the years, and the fact that I am earning back some of the money, I only need to earn about $3700 to break even!  LIVING THE DREAM, YOU GUYS!

BUT LORRAINE, What the EFF is Baby Wants Candy?

“The audience shouts out a title of a musical that has never been performed before. Accompanied by a full band, the first title that the group hears becomes the title and theme for that evening’s completely improvised 60 minute musical that BWC creates on the spot.”

I am so freaking excited!! Besides getting paid to perform - which is always awesome, this company is notably FIERCE in the improv world and composed of some of the most talented improvisers around.  I feel so honored to get to sub in on this mini tour!  WISH ME LUCK!!!

Lorraine

WELCOME HOME, JAMIE!

One of our teammates had to join us late in (#PIF8) Providence, so my team, Borealis, and our sister team, Local 154, decided to give him a warm welcome to the party.  Jamie had no idea what hit him.  I love these crazies!

Homosexuality for Comedy’s Sake?

This GLOC article on the Brie & Jacobs’s (aka the two hot chicks on Community) faux lesbian photoshoot for GQ got me thinking.

In the article it says:

Openly gay NY performer Jess Barbagallo asks, “Why is it funny when gay people kiss each other? It should be funny for the same reasons it’s funny when straight people kiss each other. It just feels sad, like girls in college who make out to get attention from guys at bars.”

I was just actually thinking about this the other day, and I’m glad that smart ladies at GLOC addressed it.  But I want to take this issue further.  Something I find generally annoying in improv or comedy, is that if two men kiss it’s ‘funny’ and if two women kiss it’s ‘hot’.  Kissing in improv in general is funny because it’s obviously two friends, who don’t want to kiss in real life on some level.  Dissecting why something is funny is a slippery slop.  My point is, I get bored with people trying to use two men or two women being intimate or affectionate as a joke.

Why is homosexuality funny?  Too me it’s just a cheap as making a joke about race or gender roles.  You would never drop an N bomb on someone or tell a woman to get back to the kitchen or you’ll beat her, if you did the audience would turn on you.

Perhaps audiences haven’t quite caught up with the gay movement.  Maybe people laugh at faux homosexuality because it is unexpected or it makes them uncomfortable that one or both straight comedians are perhaps squeamish.  As long as people laugh, I imagine improvisers/comedians will exploit homosexuality.  However, I hope that the audience becomes smart enough to give it a blank stare in time.

It’s just a cop out.  We should play to the top of our intelligence and let the circumstances, stakes and our wit bring the comedy, not just make fun someone for existing.

Now that being said: sometimes it is totally necessary to make out with a man/woman/child/giraffe in a scene and is absolutely hilarious. Nothing is off limits when it comes to comedy, but maybe we should try for the smart laugh instead of the cheap laugh - even if they sound the same.

With great power comes great responsibility.

I am leaving for Chicago in 6 days

I’m going to take an intensive with an improviser named Michael Gellman at Second City.  Currently I am planning my schedule of shows to see during the evening.

Right Now I am hoping to see:

Sunday: Sky’s the Limit (Second City)

Monday: The Armando Diaz Experience (iO)

Tuesday: Welcome to your 30’s Boys (iO)

Wednesday: TJ & Dave (iO)

Thursday: Messing with Friends (Annoyance)

Friday: Improvised Shakespeare (iO) & Baby Wants Candy

I’m hoping to squeeze in an additional show at the Annoyance or Second City as well!  Comedy nerdism, here I come!  If anyone out there has an improv/city/comedy/food/things that are awesome recommendations hit me up! Well do you?

You may not know that, whilst I do live in NYC, I am originally from Bakersfield, CA.  To commemorate my brief ‘imprisonment’ there I am doing a show with a few of my former ‘cellmates’!  Jeff Lepine, Michael Lewis and I were all in fact on my first improv team ever together: The Hermit Colony.  I was only 14 and they were 16.  I can’t believe I get to play with these upperclassmen again!

Waiting…

I auditioned for a Magnet Musical House Team over the weekend.  Supposedly they have sent out all of their rejection letters already, so things are looking allegedly good, but I won’t start counting my chickens just yet.  They should be emailing us “soon” which really means very little in the whole time spectrum.  Work is also very slow this morning.  I am refreshing my email about every 30 seconds.

My one consolation is that I booked a few Baby Wants Candy understudy gigs over the weekend, so my existence is feeling validated at the moment no matter what happens.

CAN YOU RECOMMEND SOMETHING TO KEEP ME BUSY SO I DON’T GO BONKERS WHILE I WAIT?

IT’S ALL HAPPENING. Today I was invited to join the Magnet Musical Megawatt House Team “Team Rose”.  I’ll begin performing with them at musical megawatt starting in September.  Watch out peeps!  Fun is coming!
